When relying on built-in connectors for Google Analytics in any dashboarding or reporting tool - you will without a doubt run into one of the inherent problems with how the Google Analytics API works in combination with Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Data Studio, Looker or any other dashboard and/or reporting tool.

There is nothing wrong with how Power BI, Tableau etc. imports data from any API and there is absolutely also nothing with how the Google Analytics API works.

When combining the two - the pitfalls start to show. At first glance it looks good - even solid. Comparison tests between the data in Google Analytics and the same metrics presented by the said presentation tool looks all good. 

But errors creep into your dashboards and reports...

Sampling kicks in

  • Conversion rates start to skew.
  • Integration with other data stops working, since the sample doesn't necessary contain all the integration keys.

Roll-ups/sums are misleading

  • Users metric can't just be summed.
  • Sessions metric doesn't work on page and event dimensions.
  • No user, session keys are available for distinct counting.

Dimension limits leads to time-waste

  • Multiple based tables are needed since 7 only dimensions are present in any dataset from Google Analytics.
  • Multiple data granularities makes ad-hoc analysis impossible.
  • Data governance is impossible.
